The Anchorage Audubon Society chapter is a volunteer, non-profit organization that is dedicated to the conservation of southcentral Alaska ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife, and their habitats for the benefit and enjoyment of current and future generations. Our dedicated volunteers provide field trips, natural history presentation, newsletters, the bird hotline, education programs for adults and children and support for conservation issues. Natural history presentations are scheduled for the third Thursday of every month from September through May. Our birding and natural history focused field trips are open to the public and are led by local bird experts. We welcome all levels of birders and non-birders on our field trips.
On this site you'll find information on how to join the Anchorage Audubon Society (membership to National Audubon is included). Birds and Birding in Northern Japan
Date and Time: Thursday, November 17, 7:00 pm
Location:BP Energy Center
Next Thursday, November 17, Anchorage Audubon presents Aaron Bowman who describes himself as an "Opportunistic yet obsessive birder." Aaron regularly turns up unexpected birds in Anchorage, and he displayed the same zeal during his 13 years living in Northern Japan.
Aaron, who is our new Field Trip Chair-guy at Anchorage Audubon, leaped into the birding scene on Hokkaido by participating in field studies and guiding foreign visitors. This is the perfect opportunity to get a glimpse into the area's natural history and get a preview for future trips to the area.
The Audubon monthly meeting will take place on Thursday, November 17, at 7:00pm in the BP Energy Center. There will, of course, be fabulous prizes and Cookies. We hope to see you there.
December 2011:
Winter Wildlife Around Anchorage and Christmas Bird Count Preview
Date and Time: Thursday, December 8, 7:00 pm
Location: BP Energy Center
John Schoen (former Audubon Senior Scientist) will share a sample of his favorite wildlife photographs around the Anchorage area from fall thru early spring. He will also describe some of his experiences and techniques for capturing good wildlife images and discuss the many great opportunities for viewing and photographing wildlife right in our backyard. John believes that Anchorage may be one of the most unique cities of its size in the world for providing outstanding wildlife adventures close to home.
Our December monthly meeting is also the final countdown to the 112th Audubon Society national Christmas Bird Count. The Christmas Bird Count is the largest single birding event anywhere, and Anchorage has one of the highest participations of any American city!
Please note that because of the Holiday Season, this program will take place on the SECOND THURSDAY of the month instead of our usual Third Thursday. To make up for it, there will be more cookies than usual.
Exciting Rare Bird News - Redwing in Seward
On November 16, 2011, Seward birder Carol Griswold documented the first Alaska State Record of a Redwing at Lowell Point Beach, south of Seward. This is only the second record for the northwest coast of North America. The rare Redwing stayed for 12 days but has not been seen since November 26th.
